 How To Peel A Crab

Start by pulling all the legs off at the sockets.

Carefully peel away the main back shell of the crab

Now peel away the shell from the flap on the underside of the crab. Do the same with the shell on the base of the crab.

Make sure that you get all the small pieces of shell from the leg sockets. And, the hard shell on the underside of the mouth.

There will also be a piece of shell on either side protecting the gills. Using a pair scissors, cut out the gills and discard.

You will aslo find some shell-like material here. Remove that too. A perfectly peeled crab. Keep the body and legs and discard the rest.

Pennell Rigged Crab

A step-by-step guide to mounting a whole crab on a Pennell rig

Start by cutting the peeled crab body 3/4 through.

Pierce the hook through the thick part on one half of the body.

Next, weave the hook in and out of both halves of the body. Wrap the line around the top hook of the Pennell rig.
Now place the top Pennell hook into the top of the crab. Pull the line tight so that the hook and the bait are snug against the line.
Now wrap the bait securely with thin bait elastic. You should end up with something like this, the perfect peeler crab bait.

Crazy Crab Legs

Adding peeled peeler crab legs to your bait can add more attraction, both visibly and by extra scent. Here we have demonstrated the process with half a peeler crab on the hook, but you can add them to whatever bait you like.

We only need half a crab, so cut into two pieces

Thread half the crab anto the hook like this.

Secure the bait to the hook with some thin bait elactic. It's good enough to fish like this, but the legs will add more attraction.
Now peel a few legs by removing the shell a segment at a time.. You should end up with a few soft, jelly-like legs.
Thread a leg about 1cm onto the hook. Repeat with the other legs. What fish could resist such an awesome bait?

Secure Crab Hook

There are times when a crab bait can slip around the shank of the hook and mask the point. Here's a neat little tip that is guaranteed to prevent that from happening.

Time to start saving all those old paperclips for this tip.

Straighten the paperclip and push one end into the eye of the hook.

Now start wrapping the paperclip around the shank. Leave a tag at the eye, but trim any excess near the bend of the hook.
Now pass the hook through the thin end of half a peeler. Fold the crab over the shank and hook onto the paperclip tag end.
Secure the bait with a good helping of bait elestic. Now this won't move and will keep the hook point fully exposed.
